International Day of Older Persons

How Speech Therapy, Music Therapy and Occupational Therapy Support Older Adults

Every year on 1st October, International Day of Older Persons invites us to recognise the enormous contributions older adults make to our families, communities and society. Additionally, it’s a moment to reflect on how we can better support healthy ageing, independence and wellbeing.

At QPAH, we’re proud to support older adults through Speech Therapy, Music Therapy and Occupational Therapy – not just on International Day of Older Persons, but every single day. Each discipline offers unique benefits which, together, create a holistic approach to ageing well.

Supporting Communication, Safety and Connection Through Speech Therapy

Communication is central to staying connected, expressing needs and maintaining independence; because, as people age, changes in health can affect speech, language, voice and swallowing.

Speech Therapy can support older adults experiencing:

  • Communication changes related to stroke, Parkinson’s disease, dementia or other neurological conditions
  • Voice changes that impact clarity or confidence
  • Swallowing difficulties that affect safety and enjoyment of meals
  • Cognitive communication challenges such as memory, attention or problem‑solving.

Therapy focuses on practical strategies which can help older adults stay engaged in daily life, maintain relationships and participate in meaningful activities.

Enhancing Wellbeing and Engagement Through Music Therapy

Music Therapy offers a powerful, evidence‑based way to support emotional wellbeing, cognitive function and social connection; as, for many older adults, music is deeply tied to identity, memories and joy.

Music Therapy can help with:

  • Reducing anxiety and supporting emotional regulation
  • Improving attention, memory and orientation
  • Encouraging movement, coordination and motor planning
  • Supporting communication through rhythm, melody and structured interaction
  • Creating opportunities for social connection and shared experiences.

Whether through individual sessions or group programs, music provides a motivating and meaningful pathway to participation.

Promoting Independence and Daily Living Through Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy supports older adults to do the things that matter most to them – but safely, confidently and independently.

OT can assist with:

  • Mobility, balance and fall prevention
  • Fine motor skills for tasks such as dressing, cooking or managing medications
  • Home safety assessments and practical modifications
  • Cognitive strategies for planning, organising and daily routines
  • Building confidence in everyday activities

The goal is always to empower older adults in order to live life on their terms.

Working Together for Healthy Ageing

When Speech Therapy, Music Therapy and Occupational Therapy come together, then older adults receive truly holistic support. Each discipline strengthens the others, which then creates a wrap-around approach that promotes communication, mobility, cognition, wellbeing and independence.

On this International Day of Older Persons, we celebrate the older adults in our community and consequently reaffirm our commitment to accessible, person‑centred allied health care.

If you or someone you care for could benefit from allied health support, our team is here to help. Please phone 07 5647 6120 or email [email protected] for more information.
