Medicare Rebate Expansion: Early Intervention – Speech and Sound Disorders

Medicare Expansion Means More Speech Therapy Support for Children and Young People from 1 March 2026

QPAH is delighted to share that families across Australia now have access to significantly expanded Medicare‑rebated Speech Pathology services, thanks to a major update to the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) M10 item group. This change, effective 1 March 2026, represents one of the most important improvements to speech therapy access provided by Medicare. It ensures more children and young people under 25 can receive the early, evidence‑based support they need to communicate confidently and participate fully in everyday life.

This expansion follows long-term industry advocacy and reflects growing recognition of the importance of early intervention for speech sound disorders, stuttering and cleft-related communication needs.

What Has Changed?

Children and young people under 25 who are suspected of, or diagnosed with, specific communication conditions can now access Medicare‑rebated assessment and treatment sessions delivered by Speech Pathologists.

The Medicare expansion means eligibility for Speech Therapy now includes:

  • Stuttering
  • Speech sound disorders (including articulation and phonological difficulties, childhood apraxia of speech and dysarthria)
  • Cleft lip and/or palate.

These conditions have now been formally added to the eligibility list under the M10 item group.

What Families Can Access

The updated M10 pathway provides:

  • Up to 8 assessment sessions (per lifetime)
  • Up to 20 treatment sessions (per lifetime).

These sessions are in addition to the existing Chronic Condition Management (CCM) Plan (formerly EPC) that families can access through their GP.

This means families now have more opportunities to receive subsidised support during the most critical periods of speech and language development.

Who Can Provide a Referral?

Referrals into the M10 pathway can be made by:

  • GPs
  • Consultant physicians
  • Specialists (e.g. Paediatricians).

Once referred, children and young people can access both assessment and treatment sessions with a Speech Pathologist, either in person or via telehealth (from anywhere around Australia).

Why This Matters

This expansion is a major step forward for families as it:

  • Improves access to early intervention
  • Reduces financial pressure
  • Supports better long‑term communication outcomes
  • Recognises the essential role of Speech Pathologists in diagnosing and treating speech sound disorders and stuttering
  • Ensures children with cleft lip and/or palate receive the intensive therapy often required during early development.

The Australian Government estimates that more than 385,000 young people may benefit from this initiative.
